This is a call to action! So many older women have told me over the years that they feel invisible or that they are disappearing. When I look at social media and women in the spotlight, I see women desperately trying to remain relevant by using filters, dying their hair, wearing so much makeup or even getting botox or plastic surgery. Seeing this brings me so much grief. As I am nearing my mid 40’s I see the women around me starting the process of visibly aging, the wrinkles around their eyes and smiles, the softness of the neck and the grey hairs intermingling with their natural color. I see in this a beautiful transformation, that says, look what I have been through in this life, look at all the smiles that have crossed my face, the worry I have overcome. We made it through our 20’s and 30’s. What a gift to now fully be able to appreciate our beauty, our power and our wisdom only for society to decide we are no longer relevant. It is time for us to stand up and be seen in our natural aging beauty. To show younger women that it is ok to age gracefully, naturally. That the wisdom we have accrued has worth and that we can teach them something. If we start to see more naturally aging women on social media perhaps we will be less fearful about the process, perhaps we will be more seen and heard by society. The pressure of being a woman in this society is too much. Let us be a part of the shift that needs to happen. Perfectionism is impossible and detrimental to us all.
